Canto 6 • Chapter 4

Ajamil's Reform and Final Liberation

Having narrowly escaped judgment, Ajamil retired to the sacred town of Hardwar to undertake focused spiritual practice. He adopted a life of austerity and constant remembrance, daily chanting the holy names with humility. Freed from previous entanglements, he devoted his remaining years to hearing scripture, serving sages, and maintaining unwavering remembrance of the Lord.

Ajamil's transformation demonstrated authentic repentance: he did not presume upon mercy but allowed gratitude to fuel steady practice. Over time, his heart softened, and the weight of past tendencies lifted. The same name he once uttered unconsciously became his conscious anchor, guiding his mind toward the Supreme and away from fleeting desires.

When Ajamil again faced the moment of death, he was prepared. The Vishnudutas reappeared—not to debate authority but to welcome a devoted soul. Their presence signified the success of his reform and the Lord's satisfaction with his sincere effort. Ajamil, now fully conscious of the Lord, departed peacefully and attained liberation, fulfilling the promise implicit in his earlier rescue.

His journey illustrates the path from negligence to redemption: initial mercy awakens responsibility, responsibility matures into disciplined practice, and disciplined practice culminates in steadfast devotion. The narrative reassures seekers that even severe missteps can be overcome when one turns genuinely toward the Supreme, while also warning that grace is meant to inspire commitment, not complacency.

This chapter closes the Ajamil narrative, leaving readers with a practical model: seize the holy name, reform conduct, seek sacred association, and persevere. The Sixth Canto thus anchors its opening in a tangible story of fall and recovery, demonstrating that the divine name offers both immediate shelter and a lifetime roadmap to liberation.
