Canto 5 • Chapter 21

The Cycles of Creation and Dissolution

The Fifth Canto reveals profound truths about the nature of time and the cosmic cycles through which the material universe periodically manifests and dissolves. Unlike the linear time that characterizes human experience, cosmic time operates in vast cycles of creation and dissolution, with each cycle lasting incomprehensibly long periods by material standards. Understanding these cosmic cycles helps sincere seekers develop proper perspective on their own existence and on the temporary nature of all material phenomena.

The smallest unit of cosmic time is called a brahmi second, and these seconds accumulate into minutes, hours, days, months, years, and increasingly vast cycles. The most commonly referenced cycle is the day of Brahma, which lasts for 4.32 billion earth years. During this vast period, the entire universe remains manifest and all conscious beings within it engage in their various activities. At the conclusion of a day of Brahma, the universe undergoes partial dissolution—the lower planetary systems are destroyed, and all conscious beings are transferred to higher realms. After the night of Brahma, which is equally long, the universe manifests again and the cycle continues.

Beyond the day of Brahma are still vaster cycles—the year of Brahma and ultimately the lifetime of Brahma, which lasts for 311 trillion earth years. At the conclusion of Brahma's lifetime, the entire material universe undergoes complete dissolution. All material elements are withdrawn back into the Supreme's energy, all conscious beings are transferred to their eternal positions, and the material universe ceases to exist. This process repeats eternally, with new universes manifesting and dissolving in endless cycles.

These cosmic cycles demonstrate a fundamental truth that the Fifth Canto emphasizes—nothing in the material universe is permanent. Even the grandest cosmic structures, even the longest lifespans, even the most stable seeming situations are ultimately temporary and subject to dissolution. This recognition naturally leads sincere beings toward dispassion regarding endless material pursuits and toward orientation toward the eternal spiritual realm where no dissolution occurs.

However, the Fifth Canto also teaches that despite the endless cycles of creation and dissolution, the Supreme Lord Himself remains eternally beyond these cycles. The Lord does not change, does not grow older, does not experience the cycles of time. The Supreme stands as an eternal witness to all the cosmic dramas that occur within the material universe, eternally compassionate toward all beings who temporarily inhabit His creation. This eternal nature of the Supreme provides the ultimate stability and permanent reference point within the ever-changing universe.

Understanding the cosmic cycles teaches sincere beings that their true home and true welfare do not lie in the material universe, which is inherently impermanent. Rather, their eternal home lies in the spiritual realm where dissolution never occurs and where all beings established there remain eternally in happiness and in relationship with the Supreme. This understanding naturally motivates sincere seekers to dedicate their efforts toward achieving the supreme goal rather than toward the endless accumulation of material possessions and achievements that will inevitably be destroyed.

This chapter teaches that the material universe, despite its apparent vastness and apparent permanence, operates within infinite cycles of manifestation and dissolution. Every moment brings all beings closer to the inevitable dissolution of their current bodies and their current circumstances. This recognition, rather than being depressing, can serve as a liberating force that frees sincere beings from excessive attachment to temporary situations and motivates them to dedicate their precious human lives to achieving the eternal goal that transcends all these material cycles and leads to permanent happiness in the spiritual realm.
