Canto 4 • Chapter 17

The Sages' Blessings and Prithu's Achievements

As King Prithu continued to establish his magnificent reign and expand his righteous kingdom, the great sages and spiritual masters of the universe observed his extraordinary achievements with profound admiration and joy. Understanding that Prithu was engaged in the sacred work of establishing dharma and facilitating the spiritual advancement of all beings, the sages decided to gather together for the purpose of offering their blessings and counsel to the great king. These were not mere ceremonial blessings but were infused with spiritual power accumulated through their own tapasya and meditation, capable of enhancing Prithu's abilities and protecting his divine mission. The sages understood that when great beings are engaged in righteous work, offering genuine support and blessings can accelerate progress toward the universal goal.

The assembly of sages traveled to Prithu's capital city, and Prithu, recognizing their immense spiritual authority and wisdom, received them with the highest respect and honor. He performed elaborate rituals of welcome, offering them the most comfortable accommodations, the finest food, and his own personal attention to their needs. More importantly, Prithu approached them with an open heart and sincere humility, asking for their guidance and blessing for his continued efforts to establish a perfectly righteous kingdom. The sages, pleased by Prithu's humility and his genuine respect for spiritual authority, began to speak to him about the nature of his mission and offered predictions about his future achievements.

The sages explained to Prithu that his kingdom would become legendary throughout cosmic history as a perfect example of dharmic governance. They predicted that his reign would last for many thousands of years and that during this entire period, there would be no theft, no violence, no deception, and no crime of any kind. All people would live according to their prescribed duties, performing their work with integrity and dedication to the Supreme Lord. The forests would yield abundant fruits and herbs, the rivers would flow with pure water, the earth would produce crops in abundance, and all living beings would enjoy health, prosperity, and spiritual advancement. The demigods themselves would watch Prithu's kingdom with admiration, and the cosmic administrators would cite his reign as the model of righteous governance for all subsequent rulers to emulate.

The sages further blessed Prithu that his descendants would inherit his spiritual consciousness and his commitment to dharma, establishing a dynasty that would continue to rule with righteousness for many generations. They told him that any ruler in his lineage who maintained sincere devotion to the Supreme Lord and governed according to spiritual principles would automatically receive the blessings of the cosmic forces and would experience smooth and prosperous reigns. Conversely, any descendant who abandoned these principles would face immediate difficulties, demonstrating that cosmic forces naturally support dharma and oppose adharma. The sages concluded by assuring Prithu that his ultimate destiny was the achievement of eternal relationship with the Supreme Lord and that all his efforts in establishing his kingdom were ultimately preparing him for the highest spiritual realization.

After receiving these blessings from the assembly of sages, Prithu felt renewed confidence and spiritual strength. He understood that his material achievements were being recognized by the universe's spiritual authorities, but more importantly, he understood that his real success consisted not in the magnitude of his kingdom but in his sincere devotion to the Supreme Lord and his commitment to serving all beings according to dharmic principles. He resolved to continue his efforts with even greater dedication, always remembering that he was ultimately serving the Lord's purposes and that all achievements ultimately belonged to the Lord alone. The presence of the sages in his kingdom radiated spiritual energy that elevated the consciousness of all the inhabitants, creating an atmosphere of genuine spiritual culture and authentic devotional practice throughout the land.

This chapter teaches an important principle about the role of spiritual masters and realized souls in supporting those engaged in righteous work. The blessings of genuinely realized souls carry tremendous power because they are based on wisdom and spiritual insight rather than merely on superficial judgment. Moreover, this chapter demonstrates that genuine achievement is always recognized and supported by cosmic forces and by spiritual authorities, not through magical intervention but through the alignment of individual effort with universal principles. Prithu's receptivity to guidance from the sages and his humility despite his position of power exemplifies the qualities that enable continued spiritual growth even for those engaged in material governance. The chapter affirms that dharmic leadership and spiritual consciousness go hand in hand, and that true leaders always remain humble students before those who are spiritually more advanced.
