The Renunciation of Kardama
Maitreya described how, after fulfilling his duties as husband and father, Kardama prepared to renounce worldly life. Before departing, the Supreme Lord appeared as their son, Lord Kapila, effulgent and serene, confirming the promise given to both the sage and Devahuti. Seeing the Lord manifest in his home, Kardama offered prayers of gratitude, acknowledging that his austerities and household service had culminated in direct association with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Lord’s presence validated that household life, when centered on devotion, can lead to the highest perfection.
Kardama addressed the Lord with humility, requesting permission to withdraw to the forest for exclusive meditation. He expressed confidence that Devahuti would be fully protected and enlightened by Kapila’s teachings. The Lord approved Kardama’s renunciation, affirming that a householder who has discharged responsibilities and nurtured devotion may rightfully seek deeper absorption. This endorsement underscored that genuine renunciation follows duty, not neglects it.
Before leaving, Kardama offered respects to Devahuti, praising her service and resilience. He reminded her that Kapila’s guidance would lead her to liberation and that his departure was not abandonment but a transition of her care to the Supreme Lord Himself. Devahuti accepted his decision with faith, realizing that her spiritual journey was now directly connected to the Lord’s instruction.
Maitreya highlighted that Kardama’s renunciation was joyful and orderly: no bitterness, no unfinished obligations, and complete reliance on the Lord. His departure exemplified the ideal sequence—practice austerity, enter household life in service to the Lord, raise saintly progeny, and then renounce with the Lord’s blessing.
Vidura appreciated this framework, seeing that both engagement and withdrawal can be sacred when aligned with divine purpose. The chapter closes with Kardama departing to the forest, leaving Devahuti in the shelter of Lord Kapila, setting the stage for the Lord’s instructions on devotion and analysis of matter and spirit.
